A Woman In...International Affairs!

Name: Carol

Vocation: Cofounder of Franklin Street Policy Group, an advisory firm and professional networking organization

Location: Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY

1. What do you currently do now and how did you end up here? Any pit stops along the way and did those pit stops help you get to the career and woman you are now?

I am currently the cofounder of an organization that convenes, connects, and advises global impact leaders across sectors to develop solutions without borders. I worked for a management consultant for 15 years, which was incredibly rewarding but I felt something was missing. I made the decision to return to school to earn a Master’s degree in International Affairs at Columbia University. After graduating, a classmate and I would get together to catch up and would end up talking for hours about international affairs and the implications for businesses and development organizations. We decided to start a policy group to connect with others in NYC who have similar interests. What started as casual dinners among friends grew into the business we have today.

Eight years ago I started DJing as a hobby in New York City, while I was working in advertising. Two years ago, I quit my job to go freelance. Having more control over my schedule and time gave me the opportunity to try new things, which eventually led to me DJing full time.

I've had more jumps in my resume than I'd like to admit, but with each move, I grew a lot professionally and personally. Each time I started a new job, I stepped more and more out of my comfort zone, and that's especially true of when I left my full time job.

Since April 2013, I’ve functioned as the Director of Strategy& Data Analytics at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital which means I have the nebulous role of developing the hospital’s analytic infrastructure, including (but not limited to) the processes, policies and vision for how we use data institutionally. It’s a fantastic blend of being nerdy & analytical & technical and holistic almost academic, making connections between what’s going on federally with the Affordable Care Act and the “Big Data” hype and how we meet the needs of our institution. I do my best thinking out loud and with others (usually on a white board – I love white boards!) so I am very fortunate to work with highly intelligent, collaborative and fun colleagues.

Vocation: Marketing

1. What do you currently do now and how did you end up here? Any pit stops along the way and did those pit stops help you get to the career and woman you are now?

I just took a role as the Head of Growth at Yelp Eat24, Yelp's food delivery and takeout business. My prior experience includes acquisition marketing for Gilt Groupe and Travelzoo, retention marketing for Time Inc., product marketing for Facebook and brand marketing for the ad tech startup Boostable. Along the way, I got my MBA at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.

I don't think I would characterize any experience as a "pit stop" because I believe that every experience shapes us into who we are as people.

Currently, I'm directing a killer digital marketing team at PureWow (shameless plug: sign up for our emails! They are great!).  I often ask myself how I ended up here... It's been a circuitous route for sure but I don't think I'd call anything a pit stop as each step taught me a lot of what I did or didn't want to do, my strengths and weaknesses, and want kind of manager/leader I aspire to be.

I own a Bakery called Sweet Heather Anne.  My love for food was cultivated by an inspiring study abroad experience in Italy.  After returning, I poured all of my art making efforts into cake.  My dream to own a bakery followed a thrilling experience on a Food Network cake competition where I met amazing cake designers from around the country.  Starting the business was surprisingly easy compared to building and maintaining it.  Early pitfalls included running out of money, not having a business plan, and working relentless hours.  My most recent pitfall has been spending too much time working in the business to work on the business.

I currently work at South Coast Community Services (SCCS) as a Quality Assurance Specialist. My responsibilities include auditing medical paperwork to ensure services will be rendered without recoupment and aid in additional documentation training for new employees. I initially started at SCCS in 2002 when I was 19 years old as a Direct Care Staff for highly aggressive and developmentally delayed children’s group home. We would be assaulted on a regular basis and would need to physically restrain the children in order to keep them safe as well as others in the home.

1. What do you currently do now and how did you end up here? Any pit stops along the way and did those pit stops help you get to the career and woman you are now?

I managed to balance a career of being a teacher and an artist for about 11-years in New York, and it was a really wonderful time. I started down the blogging route, thus ultimately leading to what I knew I wanted to do more, which was create a show to share and shed light on the great loves of art and food. I finally decided to go full-force into founding my educational company, which I hope will serve as a foundation for many great projects and opportunities, and encourage others to seek their own joys in these areas as well. Both, in my opinion, really do reflect so much of us in a universal way, and just manage to bring us all together.

There were definitely pit stops, and I won't lie, they really tested me.

I am a yoga teacher. How did I end up here? Holy shit, who knows, but more importantly I'm really glad I did. And lucky I guess. I told myself through college that I wanted to be a dentist. I worked moderately hard trying to achieve the impossible basically. Pit-stops along the way were mostly just me wanting to live more and have more fun which made it so that I didn't get a 4.0 or an very good DAT score and I didn't get accepted anywhere. But let me back up for a second...I was encouraged to take yoga in the off-season (college volleyball) in 2001.

Growing up, I was absolutely certain I was going to be a musician.  I studied classical Piano from the time I was 10, later attending a specialized Arts High School and a Conservatory for college.  After finishing school, I was in for a pretty big awakening when my lack of experience and good Chopin skills didn’t translate into an awesome rent-paying job!

But, I quickly realized I should be pursuing my passion and it has been working out so far.

1. What do you currently do now and how did you end up here? Any pit stops along the way and did those pit stops help you get to the career and woman you are now?

I own and operate Omnia, a curated vintage store - selling both online and at the Brooklyn Flea Market on the weekends. I think I ended up here by having a serious obsession with thrifting! I’ve always been connected to fashion and retail in my work life, starting with assisting at a vintage shop in NJ during high school, then studying Fashion Design at FIT while working at Wet Seal - a Forever 21 type store. I worked at the one in the Manhattan Mall on 34th st. around the holiday season - that was crazy. Then I waitressed and worked in restaurants doing basic bookkeeping for a couple years, where I realized that I did not like to sit at a desk in an office, at all. My most influential job was at Housing Works Thrift Shops, where I spent most of my 20s. Housing Works is a New York City based non-profit helping the homeless and HIV/AIDS population and known for their high volume shops filled to the brim with donated goods. What an experience!!

Q1. When did you first get into vintage? What was the first piece that really excited you and jumpstarted your love for vintage all these years?

I first got into vintage 13 or so years ago so it’s kind of hard to pinpoint the very first item that inspired me.  However, one special piece from the early days of thrifting does come to mind.  It’s a shirt that epitomized my flamboyant vintage-wearing high school years, but still remains something I would pick today.  It was a knit 70’s red pullover short sleeve top with a single front pocket and white trim.  It was too perfect, but it stunk to high heavens like thrift store and years of storage so I hung it outside for weeks on end trying to combat the smell.  I eventually did wear it into the ground, but I’ll never forget this trusty basic.

A Woman In... Bartending, Burlesque, and Costume Design

Name: Alison

Vocation: Bartender, Burlesque Show Producer, Costume Designer (shop here: CherrySwanDesigns)

Location: Park Slope, Brooklyn

1. What do you currently do now and how did you end up here? Any pit stops along the way and did those pit stops help you get to the career and woman you are now?

I currently survive as a bartender, producer of the burlesque show Naughty Noir and costume designer for Cherry Swan Designs (available at Artist & Fleas Brooklyn!). There have been numerous pit stops along the way. I have been bartending for 16 years. For about 10 of this I also worked as a fashion and visual stylist. First in Miami then NYC. I created and produced a few fashion and live music shows in Miami then got caught up in the styling. Every few years I would change careers. From bartender to stylist to visual work, back and forth. I'm a jack of many trades and enjoy changing my environment and routine. I think all of the different careers has opened my eyes to what I really want and enjoy on work. Which is basically to fill my time creating, be it shows or clothing or a visual piece. The bartending I do enjoy but at this point it's just to pay the bills.

1. What do you currently do now and how did you end up here? Any pit stops along the way and did those pit stops help you get to the career and woman you are now?

Currently I am pursuing my graduate degree in architecture after working for three years in the field of architecture at various firms in New York. I am ALL for taking pit stops. After my second year of architecture school I felt unclear as to what made me want to go into this field in the first place. As I left school a professor gave me some wise advice; architecture is not a race it's a marathon. I think this can be applied to any field. I like to pace myself, and better understand what is motivating me to do something. After spending a year taking courses in another field (community development and applied economics) I decided that I did want to continue in architecture, and upon returning enjoyed it more.

I'm currently working on starting my dog walking & pet sitting business again in New York (www.playpalsnyc.com). I got the idea a couple of years ago and it was one of the best things that have ever happened to me! I was living in London at the time, but I wasn't really happy with my job and I knew I needed a change. I knew that I had to find something that I'm passionate about and enjoy doing in order to be happy and fulfilled.
